The historical novels "The Pillars of the Earth" and its successors put the reader into the dark Middle Ages. The history of the Salisbury Cathedral is said to have served Follett as a model for the first volume "The Pillars of the Earth", which was published in 1990 under the original title "The Pillars of the Earth".
Its sequel "World Without End" was released 17 years later and takes place about 200 years after the events of the first volume. Follett linked the story of the main characters with the history of the development of architecture, as well as with political and social events in the Middle Ages. In 2010 and 2012, the first two books were produced in a German-Canadian production as multi-part television films and reached millions of viewers worldwide.
In 2017, the third part "A Column of Fire" finally appeared.
