Ludwig Thoma war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, der durch seine ebenso realistischen wie satirischen Schilderungen des bayerischen Alltags und der politischen Geschehnisse seiner Zeit populär wurde.
Thoma, der 1867 in Oberammergau als Sohn eines Oberförsters geboren wurde, studierte zunächst selbst Forstwissenschaft, dann jedoch Jura in München und Erlangen. Von 1893 bis 1899 arbeitete er als Rechtsanwalt. Es folgte die Mitarbeit an der satirischen Wochenzeitung "Simplicissimus" und ab 1907 am "März".
Im 1. Weltkrieg war er Krankenpfleger. Später lebte er in München und Rottach-Egern und starb 1921 in Rottach/Tegernsee.
